Gamova: ‘O Brasil é um time com o qual não simpatizo’
LANCENET:
The Russia is the twice champion of World Championship, including winning of Brasil, but could not be able to get the champion of Olympic, do you feel a little bit bother?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I am ready to leave all the things aside to achieve to conquer the gold of Olympic.
LANCENET:
For knowing the team of Brasil, the victory in the final was more easy?
Before the game, do you feel that the team is going to win this game?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I do not think that was made easy. They also know us. Before the game against Brasil, Sokolova said in the changing room “We are going to win.” Different from her, I did not have the premonitions, I do not have the insight that we are going to win. I would just like everything starts soon. When the game started, I do not let my feeling of calm and confident go away. In the end of the game, yes, I know that we are going to win.
LANCENET:
What was going through in your head when the game was in the last set in decision?
Ekaterina Gamova:
Before the fifth set, I looked in the eyes of each girls and saw the wish of winning the game. Or better, the wish not to lose. We invest our souls and hearts in the ball, and so we win.
LANCENET:
Believe it that your performance in the final of World Champion, against Brasil, we the best in your career? On that day, before the game, did you feel that you were inspired a great game?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I just played. But I certain that I was inspired. Playing wildly against Brasil. I know that we had to prepare for the lost. But in final, I believe, that was what motivated me. The wish to win that made me to play so well.
LANCENET:
When you arrived in Russia, were received with big party. However, Merkulova said that Brasil was lacked of fair play, since there was traditional greeting in the net after the match. You also think of this way?
Ekaterina Gamova:
We have a long “war” with Brazil. We cannot use masks to disguise this war. It has no depth, no nobility. We just do not like rivals who want to make of us, this is normal in relations between the teams. With some, however, we have sympathy, and some have a great dislike. Brasil is a team that I, frankly, do not like.
LANCENET:
With this height (2.02 m), do you think it takes advantage over the opponent?
Ekaterina Gamova:
No, I do not take any advantage. Frankly, the height is not the most important factor in volleyball.
LANCENET:
In Brasil, especially after your performance in the final, opened a discussion about how one would act if their performance in men. How do you think it would be?
Ekaterina Gamova:
We are at different stages. The volleyball is designed more for strength. But the women, for the technique. I think men would play better if they were as women doing a lot of technique, instead of so much strength.
LANCENET:
The Brasil team is the reigning Olympic champion. Russia is the current twice of the champion of world championship. After all, who is better?
Ekaterina Gamova:
Of course it’s Russia! How could I say others? Russia is my country, the team that I advocate. Brasil is a great team, but Russia today is better.
LANCENET:
So, favoritism when Brazil had entered the competition becomes Russia? Think you have taken this label on other teams?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I think so. Again, I think we are better. After all, I am a Russian athlete, not brasilian.
LANCENET:
You are now in age 30, do you think about retirement? Winning the Olympics is still a desire that you have in your career?
Ekaterina Gamova:
Nothing will make me to leave volleyball before the London Olympics in 2012. I believe that a serious injury just make me stop before this competition, which I think is most important. Despite two world championship, desire an Olympic title in my career.
LANCENET:
With 2.02 m, you have trouble finding a boyfriend? This height intimidates men or they think it is normal?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I have friends who do not belong to the world of sport. Not many, but that came into my life many years ago. That’s enough for me. The strange thing is that sometimes some men treat me like a famous person. But they do not know me, do not accept that I am a girl, a normal person who has friends and family.
LANCENET:
Did you receive an offer to play volleyball in Brasil? If yes, why you did not come to play? If not, would you like to play here?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I never had called to work in Brasil. If they had given, I would not accept. It’s too far for me. I played at Fenerbahce, Turkey, last season and had a proposal to remain, even increase the time of the contract. The conditions were excellent, I love the fans there and the club. But I opted to return to Russia, stay close to my friends and family. It was the best time to do that.
LANCENET:
Why did you decide to play volleyball? The height affects anything in your decision?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I had no choice. My aunt was a technical team of children’s volleyball. So I spent my childhood in the gym, watching her give training. Meanwhile, I was playing with volleyball.
LANCENET:
Do you like football? What did you think of Russia to host the 2018 World Cup?
Ekaterina Gamova:
I am very proud of Russia has won the right to host the World Cup. I believe that my country is able and will make a very high level tournament.
